Organizational and Human Resources

Knowledge, skills, and dispositions used in the management of institutional human capita, financial and physical resources.

Implement strategies, interview protocols and decisions regarding staff selection that adheres to institutional policy and meets organizational goals.

  • University of Missouri Involvement Graduate Assistantship | In the spring of this assistantship, I hired a new executive board and nine new involvement ambassadors. This came from a long process of understanding what this group wanted to see happen in the next year, goals that they had, changes they wanted to see, and who fit what we as a team wanted in a new group.

Develop recruitment and hiring strategies that increase individuals from under-represented groups to apply for positions.

  • University of MissouriInvolvement Graduate Assistantship | During the beginning phases of the hiring process, I determined who I wanted to bring in for an interview depending on what groups they were involved in. I was looking for folks who were specifically from organizations that were not the University of Missouri top 10 most popular clubs or organizations. I wanted ambassadors that could talk to students about different involvement opportunities and smaller, cultural, diverse, or queer organizations.

Apply a range of strategies for motivating others.

  • Illinois State University | Housing Graduate Assistantship | During my time advising my resident assistants, there were many times that I had to work to come up with creative ways to motivate them. My RAs were not paid, and usually were only motivated by free housing and because they enjoyed the position, which was not always enough. Sometimes, I was working with my students to see how we could manage the RA position and being a student.

Effectively resolve conflict within the unit and among unit members and other in a timely manner.

  • Illinois State University | Housing Graduate Assistantship | A main reason I chose this assistantship was to gain that conflict resolution experience; this role did not disappoint. I often had to work with my students to manage conflict, drama, and other issues that came up within the group. Beyond that, I also helped manage a lot of roommate or single student conflict on our designated floors.

Effectively manage and lead meetings through the use of agenda management strategies.

  • University of Missouri | Involvement Graduate Assistantship | During this assistantship, the group I oversaw, called the Involvement Ambassadors, would have biweekly executive board meetings as well as general board monthly meetings. I would also have biweekly meetings with each member of the executive board. I would lead each of these meetings, letting the executive board be responsible for a piece of the general meeting.

Adapt to situation-appropriate communication strategies that effectively communicate with various groups.

  • University of Missouri Involvement Graduate Assistantship | Situation appropriate communication in student affairs is very important and it is something I learned early on in this assistantship. I would often work closely with various groups at one time which meant, for me, that I would need to change communication gears (so to speak) fairly quickly. Sometimes, I would be in the same room as my students, my supervisor, the coordinator of the office, and the chancellor. Other times, I would be at an event with coordinators from several offices, several students, my students, and then the VP of Student Affairs might stop by. Clearly my communication would differ between those interactions, but I had to be sure that I was professional through and through.
